Indoors 2009-10

Welcome to the indoors season.  Indoors the bosses get closer, but the targets get smaller.  The rounds are shorter as well so they are easier to practice.  We have several badge schemes, as well as the scalp card league and the handicap cup runs all winter as well.  Use the indoors to work on your style, tune your gear and improve your scores but most importantly, have fun!  This section will help you get the most out of your indoor season.  So, what do you want to do?

How to get the most from the indoors season
When you come down to the club, come down with an aim.  You can:-
i) train and work on your style
ii) train and tune your bow
iii) practice and score for a badge
iv) do a FITA beginner award lesson
v) practice shooting a competition by shooting a full round

When training you do not score, you work on things and change things and don't concentrate on where the arrows have gone.  When practicing you do everything as if it were a competition.

The Rounds
All rounds are shot with six sighters.  All rounds (except the Worcester) are ten-zone scoring and shot in ends of three.  The Worcester is scored 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and shot in ends of five.  All rounds will give you a handicap and classification rating.

Bray 2                  2.5 dozen arrows, 25 yards, 60cm target face

Handicaps and Classifications
Every time you shoot a recognised round you will receive a handicap and classification.  GNAS have set a level for classification.  Indoors the classifications are Archer, G, F, E, D, C, B and A.  You start as "Archer" and need three scores of any level to achieve that level.

For handicaps, you start at 100 and reduce down.  You have a separate indoors and outdoors handicap.  Every time you shoot a handicap, if that is better than your present handicap you get the average of the two as your new handicap.  If you get a handicap of around 40 you will be shooting at county championship standard!

Handicap Cup
Each month the junior that reduces their handicap by the most will be awarded the handicap cup to keep for that month.  The person that wins it the most in one year gets to keep the cup forever!

The Scalp Card Scheme - How many scalps can you get???

This is a scheme so that you can shoot matches against other club members and win.  The idea is to collect as many scalps as possible, including off the adults!  The match is handicapped and if you win the match then your opponent signs the back of your card and you have their scalp.  See the scalp card rules for a full explanation.

November Challenge
Shoot loads of Portsmouth rounds in November and your best will be entered into the national league.  Abby will remind you in November.  For further information on the November Challenge click here.

JAWS Scheme
No, not sharks - the Junior Award Scheme.  You build up points all year by doing as many different things as possible, as well as you can!  We add the points up at the end of December and send it off to GNAS.  All juniors in the country are then ranked and the top 100 get a special badge.  For further information on the JAWS click here.

Club Badges - Whitburn Progress Awards
These are the same as outdoors, you shoot three dozen arrows and score to claim the badge!  When you have shot three scores over the threshold you get the badge.  For further information on the Progress Awards click here.

FITA Beginner Awards
These are the same as for outdoors.  You complete the lessons for each badge and then sit the exam with a shooting and a question and answer part.  The junior coach will arrange evenings for these.  Can you get them all???

FITA Target Awards
Shoot World Record Status FITA 18's or FITA 25's.  Score over 500 points and get the first badge!
